A cottage-lover's dream in
the heart a Virginia small town.
Welcome to Sugartoad Cottage, aka "The Toad," and boutique couples vacation rental nestled in the heart of historic Mathews Main Street. Enjoy small-town charm just steps from local shops, art galleries, restaurants, museums, and festivals, with sandy beaches only a short drive away.
In 2021, we bought this 100 year old home and gave'er a new hip, renovating the neglected cottage almost every single weekend for over a year and a half together. This calming retreat is our pride and joy and we love giving travelers a temporary home away from home when they visit the Chesapeake Bay.

From the Saturday's farmers market and the dollar book store, a state-recognized art school and gallery, historic sites and museums, to a dozen places to stop and pick for antiques, The Toad is your home base for exploring. On a lucky weekend you might even hear music up the street playing at the visitor center, Southwinds, or Bay School Arts Center.
